I have been doing a lot of research on baby health recently, mainly because I am really interested in the field and also for my sons growth and health.
I like to get to the point and not ramble so here are the 5 most valuable( in my opinion) things that can promote the healthy growth of your baby:
- Breastfeed
- Wear your baby
- Create a positive environment
- Healthy stimulation
- Spend time
Seems kinda obvious when you think about it but many parents forget these simple things.
Breastfeeding is the most beneficial for your baby becasue it provides exactly the right nutrients your baby needs for healthy brain and body growth. Whatever the formula marketers may tell you, formula will never provide the type of nutrition that is as good as breastmilk. The low down is this: Breastfeeding is difficult for the first 3 weeks and then gets very easy after that. Formula feeding is mediu-hard all the time. So you just have to hang with it for the first 3 weeks and then your good to go.
Wearing your baby and attachment parenting has a big following now, and it really makes sense. What new baby would want to spend the night alone in a crib in the room next door? They want to be close to you to feel secure! The closeness will promote brain development and give your baby confidence later in life. So Co-sleeping: good. Baby-wearing: good. You can wear your baby in a sling, carrier, mei tai, there are many options. Pick one that fits your lifestyle :)
A positive environment is the area in which your baby lives with you and the people that you interact with. We don't want anything or anyone that is yelling and screaming too much that might scare your baby. This includes you and your partner. The fact is that babies pick up on emotions and they feel them more intensely than we do. What we really need is healthy, positive and fun communication. Thats what will help your baby the most.
Every baby wants to learn and healthy stimulation will do that. Give them stuff to do, talk to the, smile at them, let them play with toys and explore their environment.
Time becomes precious with a newborn and you really won't have much of a choice here, but the more quality time you spend the more you and your baby will be rewarded.
